Research Technical Advisor - Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia

The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) http://www.cidrz.org/ is a Zambian NGO improving the health of Zambians by conducting locally-relevant research, providing technical support and training, and strengthening primary healthcare provision systems in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and other infectious diseases, women’s health, and newborn and child health. CIDRZ has been an active partner of the Government of the Republic of Zambia since 2001 through collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other line Ministries. CIDRZ now wishes to recruit:
Research Technical Advisor Ref No. RA/BI/17/03/15.
Reports to the Head of Research Operations. The incumbent provides scientific and technical guidance in all aspects of study conduct including: design and implementation, grant writing, study planning, regulatory approvals, protocol development and implementation, development of and implementation of study policies and procedures.
Main Duties
· Guide and support the scientific interactions of large co-investigator teams, including strategic study implementation questions.
· Serve as technical contributor/co-investigator on multiple protocols including developing the study’s scientific objectives and implementation tools, oversee study training and implementation, analyze data Plan and implement capacity building and provide mentorship to identified CIDRZ staff members in grant writing, research methods, research planning and other areas.
· Manage study expenditures of large budgets (over $1 million / year) and mentor Assistant Research Manager(s) to assume this responsibility over the course of the study.
· Mentor Study Coordinator(s) in development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for research activities and completion of all requirements for study activation.
· Advise team members on design and oversee data collection and storage systems for individual studies.
· Provide on-going support to study coordinators and other study staff as needed to ensure that studies are conducted in accordance with the study protocol, SOPs, and international regulations.
· Ensure coordinated communication between study staff, investigators, CIDRZ departments including HR, finance, regulatory and lab, CDC and other funders, MOH, and administrative staff.
· Prepare and monitor regulatory submissions for assigned research studies including, REC, MOH, PRA, UAB IRB and others as needed.
· Mentor team members and lead donor relations activities and reporting, including handling of study monitors and auditors. Provide oversight and mentorship and ensure preparation of progress reports as requested by funding agencies, CIDRZ leadership team etc.
· Mentor and support junior co-investigators and other study staff in the planning, writing, editing and submission of abstracts/manuscripts and other dissemination activities.
· Contribute to the development of abstracts & papers and participate in presentations at national, regional & international meetings.
· Support new grant acquisition and build the capacity of the development officers, including contributing to grant writing, budgeting, editing and submission, liaising with Grants and Contracts staff and other CIDRZ departments as required.
· Represent and capacitate Assistant Research Manager to represent the study or support Research Operations Officers to attend meetings with CIDRZ Lab, Pharmacy, Regulatory/QC, Community, Research, and Management Forum.
· Manage the resolution of any conflicts and/or disputes regarding staff members, with the aid of other research team members and relevant CIDRZ departments.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
· Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) or relevant equivalent (e.g. MSc, MS in a health science)
· At least two years of experience in research management
· Excellent report writing, budgeting and computer skills
· Training in Protection of Human Subjects and Good Clinical Practices
· Familiarity with regulatory procedures in Zambia an added advantage
· Data management skills and familiarity with MS Access, MS Excel software
· Data analysis experience and intermediate level of proficiency with SAS, SPSS or STATA software. Experience designing research studies.
· Basic understanding of infectious disease epidemiology, health systems, prevention, diagnostics, and clinical care. Interests in attaining further research qualifications (e.g., PhD)
