POSITION:Operations Manager, Rufunsa Conservancy
CONTRACT: Full Time – 1 Year, Renewable
LOCATION: Rufunsa Conservancy, adjacent to Lower Zambezi National park
REPORTING TO: Project Manager and Director of Operations, BioCarbon Partners
SUPERVISION OF: Field Administrator, Camp Caretakers, Forest Monitors
Scope of work:
The Operations Manager for Rufunsa Conservancy will be based at the Rufunsa Conservancy. His / her role will be to manage the day to day operations of the conservation centre using several resident staff, and to support several teams that use the conservation centre (security team, forest inventory team and community engagement team).
The position is a 1 year, renewable contract. It will best suit a hands-one person who is a skilful delegator and able to manage people as well as the 40,000ha Rufunsa Conservancy. We’re looking at a multi-talented person that is equally at home behind the wheel of a landcruiser pickup or at a computer keyboard. The scope of work can be summarised as follows:
a) Assist or co-ordinate all logistics and resources for field teams that use the conservancy
b) Maintain all structures and grounds of the conservation centre in good condition (13 buildings)
c) Manage and oversee servicing of all vehicles and equipment at conservancy (2 tractors, 2 pickups and 2 motorcycles)
d) Track company inventory (equipment, materials and fuel) on a monthly basis
e) Manage the finances of the Conservancy, including submitting an operational budget, as well as handling petty cash.
f) Submit purchase requests to the Lusaka office for approval
g) Carry out minor technical work, such as repairs to plumbing and buildings
h) Oversee all logistics and hosting of tourists and other visitors to the conservancy.
i) Oversee land management crews doing critical forest management (including prescribed burns) and road maintenance.
j) Handle all human resources for employees based at the conservation centre.
k) Maintain cordial relationships with communities neighbouring the conservancy
l) Engage with, and regulate activities of squatters within the conservancy
The Operations Manager reports to the Project Manager, the Director of Operations, or a designate.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
Must be fluent in at least one Zambian language and English. Preference given to Nyanja speakers. Must be articulate and able to communicate effectively with staff and managers at all levels. Verbal and interpersonal communication should be excellent
- Land management experience / lodge management / game ranch management experience or qualifications
- Minimum of three years in a supervisory role
- Comprehensive working knowledge of Microsoft suite (word, powerpoint, excel)
- Demonstrated competence in low-level financial management
- No criminal record
- Driving license
- Motorcycle license
Preferred:
- Zambian citizens preferred
- Prior tourism or game ranch management experience
- Experience with GPS use and GIS would be of benefit
- Knowledge of Zambian ecosystems and the natural environment, or forestry experience
- Experience working with USAID-funded projects
WORK CONDITIONS
- The Operations Manager will be based at Rufunsa Conservancy. Accommodation will be a small room, with access to running water and toilet.
- The standard duty cycle for staff at Rufunsa is 24 days on, 7 days off.
- The camp where we live is in a wilderness area, adjacent to Lower Zambezi National Park, far from shops and towns and mostly out of cellphone network.
