Head of Gender Section
The Gender Section is based in the Secretary-General’s Office, reflecting the high political priority accorded to gender equality by the Commonwealth. As Head, you will provide leadership, strategic direction and management for a 6-strong team. You will oversee annual planning, personnel and financial management; lead advisory missions; represent the Secretariat; and take responsibility for results.
You will have deep knowledge and experience in gender and with at least ten years’ senior management experience including the development and implementation of gender policies and programmes. You will have the ability to network, build effective partnerships and influence senior people; and have leadership skills. You will conceive, develop and lead advisory and advocacy activities; maintain an overview of trends and priorities in women’s rights and gender equality in member countries and globally. You will also co-ordinate the organisation and delivery of high-level meetings; and maintain good working relationships with ministers and senior officials.
By joining our Gender Section, you will support the development of gender awareness in all aspects of the Secretariat’s work. You will also support member states in their national gender plans and policies, and in advancing international commitments and protocols on gender equality. Your work will aim in particular to enhance women’s capacity for political, economic and social empowerment as well as improving women’s access to justice.
As the inter-governmental body of the Commonwealth, comprising 53 independent sovereign states, we provide sustainable and people-centred democracy and development through professional advice, transfer of best practice and the enhancement of skills and knowledge.
To be considered, you must be a citizen of a Commonwealth country.
